Arthur

What a fun chap Arthur is. Gotta love the shoe brush mustache. When I was growing up back in New Jersey my Dad had a shoe-shine kit that he used frequently. He was a real estate salesman and was quite particular about how he presented himself. He had a brush just like this one and he taught me how to properly use it on leather shoes.

I was so good at it that I got a part time job after school as a shoe-shine boy at the local hi-end mens haircut place (I grew up in a fairly affluent town). This was back in the early 70’s and I got a whopping 40 cents a shine! (plus tips, of course). This was actually good money in those days. I could walk out of there with 5 or 6 bucks, enough to buy a burger, fries and a Coke, see a movie, roll a few games at the local bowling alley and buy a whole pile of candy. We weren’t well off like most of our neighbors but I always had a few dollars in my pocket to take care of myself with. My parents taught me the importance of self-reliance from an early age.

Anyway, Arthur is a fun mix of parts, including a wire brush, half a hubcap from a 50’s Dodge, an Indian looking incense holder/urn thing, assorted heavy nuts and a big, solid steel ball for an eye, all on a raised wood picture frame. A real character Arthur is. I like him very much.
